You start planting after Dean Clary gives you the gardener's job and teaches you to prepare plots in the campus garden. For Songs of Glimmerwick how to plant seeds, right-click your seeds to equip them, stand beside an empty tilled plot, and press Space, or drag a seed directly onto the plot. Water it that same day so it can grow overnight.
How do you get your first seeds and planting space?
On the morning of Spring 2, Clary sends you a note asking you to visit her office, upstairs from the Dorm Hall. Accepting the gardener's job starts Campus Career, and she meets you at the garden gate later that day. She teaches the Song of Tilling and gives you 5 Basil Seeds, with a request to bring her 3 Basil for her turtle.
The campus garden is the only ground you can till.

Clary's lesson also covers clearing dead trees with Chant of the Woodcutters and dealing with weeds using a scythe. For those tools, see the Songs of Glimmerwick scythe guide or Songs of Glimmerwick axe guide for the tool question.
How do you turn marked ground into a usable plot?
Tilling only marks ground for the enchanted hoe; wait for it to dig before you sow.
Play the Song of Tilling in the garden
Enter flute mode and play A S J on keyboard, or ↓ ← A on controller. The song tutorial tells you to read the notes from bottom to top, and you can click its scroll to enter practice mode. If the instrument itself is confusing you, the Songs of Glimmerwick flute types guide covers that separate question.
Mark the ground and choose its plot type
Click to mark one plot, or click and drag to mark several. Shape buttons let you use a single plot, a straight line, or a circle. Press Ctrl, or Y on controller, to show snap dots when you want new plots lined up with existing ones.
Accept the marked plots and wait for the hoe
Click the tick to accept. Your enchanted hoe walks out and digs each plot; unfinished plots are dug overnight. For your first Basil, a few small plots are enough.
Which plot does your seed need?
The plot-type button switches between small crop plots and large tree plots. What you plant decides which one you need.
| What you're planting | Required plot |
|---|---|
| Normal seeds, including your first Basil | Small plot |
| Tree saplings | Large tree plot |
| Colossal Pumpkin Seed | Large tree plot |
If you try the wrong type, your character says so. For Clary's Basil, use small plots.
Which planting control should you use?
Equip seeds and press Space: recommended for keyboard
Right-click the seeds to equip them, stand beside the plot, and press Space, the keyboard interact key. The tutorial calls this the simpler method.
Drag a seed onto the plot
Drag the seed directly onto an empty tilled plot if you'd rather aim with the mouse.
Why isn't a newly planted seed growing?
Freshly tilled ground still needs watering. A crop grows one step each night after a day you watered it. Skip watering on planting day and it won't grow that night.
Pick up the Watering Can near the garden shed. It starts empty, so fill it at the little garden pond before using it. Clary suggests buying one in town, but nobody sells one.
Fill the can at the pond, not the Magic Well by the gate. The well is where you drop finished crops to get paid overnight.

Equip the filled can and interact with the planted plot, or drag the can onto it. The soil turns dark when it's wet: use that visible change to confirm you've watered it. If watering equipment becomes your next question, continue with Songs of Glimmerwick move sprinkler.
Your first Basil is ready after three watered days. For example, planting and watering a three-day crop on Spring 4, then watering it each day, makes it ready on the morning of Spring 7.
Once you have 3 Basil, take them to Clary's office to complete Basil for a Turtle and receive 6 Sunflower Seeds. Basil regrows every two days, so sell the rest or keep some for later quests. More seeds are sold at Kavita's stall in the Wisk market.
